Healthcare technology is no longer something that sits in the IT department and occasionally reaches the bedside. It now shapes how nurses document care, how clinicians review patient histories, how hospitals measure outcomes and how patients communicate with their care teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift is also influencing how advanced nursing leadership is discussed in academic and professional settings. Actually, pathways such as the Wilkes University MSN to doctorate of nursing degree<\/a> point to a broader reality across nursing education. Now, experienced nurses are being prepared for roles where clinical expertise, systems thinking and digital fluency increasingly overlap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The broader trend is clear. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reported in May 2026 that DNP enrollment grew by 5.9%, adding 2,488 students. AACN also reported that DNP programs are now offered at 452 U.S. schools of nursing. That growth is not happening in isolation. It reflects a profession preparing nurses for a healthcare system where clinical expertise must now sit beside digital judgment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Informatics is now a core nursing leadership competency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nursing education standards have already recognized the shift. For instance, AACN\u2019s Essentials identifies informatics and healthcare technologies as a core domain for nursing education. The domain focuses on using technology to support safe care, guide decision-making and expand professional knowledge for practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For DNP students, this changes the meaning of leadership preparation. Technology-savvy leadership is not about chasing every new platform. It is about learning how to judge digital tools through the lens of patient safety, care quality and clinical workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A classroom discussion about interoperability, for instance, may seem technical at first. But it becomes very practical when a student considers a patient discharged from one facility and readmitted elsewhere with incomplete information. The educational value lies in helping future nurse leaders see how data movement affects the actual care experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data shows why education must keep up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The scale of digital adoption in healthcare makes technology education unavoidable. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology reported that by 2024, 91% of office-based physicians used a certified electronic health record. ONC also reports that certified EHR technology is present across more than 95% of hospital types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health information exchange is also accelerating. In June 2026, HHS announced that more than one billion health records had been exchanged through the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement, known as TEFCA. Less than one year earlier, that number was 10 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These figures show why graduate nursing education cannot treat digital health as an add-on. Nurses are entering a system where digital records, data exchange and technology-mediated communication are already part of routine care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
