They take one unit, usually in a term that looks quiet on paper, and find out how it sits beside a full timetable and a Year 10 class whose practical reports need marking by Friday. For STEM teachers there are two common qualifications to aim at: a graduate certificate in STEM education, and a master of education with a STEM or leadership specialisation. Both can be done part-time and online. You don’t have to commit to the second until you’ve finished the first.

Key takeaways

Start with the graduate certificate. In most staged programs its units count toward the master’s.

Want more chemistry or physics content? A STEM pedagogy unit won’t give you that.

Term 2 and Term 4 are the hard ones for study, because reports and marking land then.

In Australian public schools a master’s on its own rarely moves you up the pay scale.

Graduate certificate vs master’s: how postgraduate education courses are structured

Four units, or roughly eight months of part-time study, gets you a graduate certificate. A master’s is about twice that. In a staged program the certificate units fold into the master’s, so if you stop after the first stage you lose nothing you’ve already done. The University of Canberra’s online education courses work on this staged model, and you can take the STEM specialisation at either level.

On the Australian Qualifications Framework, a graduate certificate sits at Level 8 and a coursework master’s at Level 9.

Stopping after the certificate still leaves you with a recognised qualification. If you come back a few years later, you enrol in the master’s and get credit for the units you finished. How many years, though? Each university caps how old that credit can be, and a long gap between stages can run past the limit. Ask before you take the break.

What STEM education units cover

Expect most of the core units to be about teaching method. One might have you plan a Year 8 science unit that pulls in mathematics or digital technologies. Another usually covers inquiry and design-based learning, often built on the science and engineering practices set out in the US National Research Council’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education. There is nearly always a research methods unit as well, and it leads into a small study of your own students.

If you want some reading before you pick units, give an evening to STEM Integration in K-12 Education, the 2014 National Academies report edited by Margaret Honey and colleagues. It’s American, so not all of it maps onto the Australian Curriculum.

Electives make up about half of a master’s. You can put them toward classroom STEM teaching, or toward leadership if running a science faculty is where you’re headed. Some programs are attached to a research centre. Canberra’s STEM Education Research Centre (SERC), for example, studies how children learn STEM, and that research feeds into the units.

A chemistry teacher hoping to go deeper into organic chemistry will be disappointed by a pedagogy unit. For that, look at a discipline-based graduate program in chemistry. I’d work out which of the two you want before enrolling in a single unit.

Fitting study around a teaching load

For a teacher on a full load, one unit per study period is about right. Online units are asynchronous, which means the weekly readings and recorded lectures can wait until after school or a Sunday morning. Plan on roughly 10 hours a week per unit. It swings a lot: fewer in a week with nothing due, a good deal more when an assignment is.

Term 2 and Term 4 bring reports and exam marking. Before the study period starts, put the unit’s due dates beside the school calendar. If the program lets you skip a period, skip the one that lands on your heaviest term. Programs with several shorter study periods a year make that break easier to absorb.

Most assessments draw on your own classroom. You might redesign a unit plan, or trial an inquiry lesson and analyse the student work it produced, which is close to preparation you were doing anyway. The same evidence can go toward an application against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Leadership electives sometimes need school data or a principal’s sign-off. Ask for those early, because principals are busy in the same weeks you are.

Common misconceptions

The one that comes up most: you need a master’s to teach STEM subjects. You don’t. An initial teaching qualification is enough to teach them, and postgraduate study is optional professional development, although some leadership roles prefer it.

Some teachers also write off the graduate certificate as a dead end. In a staged program it is a finished qualification and the first half of a master’s.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a graduate certificate in STEM education take?

Part-time, it fits inside one school year. Full-time is quicker. Few working teachers try it.

Can primary teachers take STEM education courses?

Yes. The units cover teaching across all school years, and plenty of primary teachers enrol because they want to feel more confident teaching science and digital technologies.

Is a Master of Education with a STEM specialisation a research degree?

Not as a rule. It is a coursework degree, though it may include a research project. If research is the goal, the education research degrees are the Master of Philosophy and the PhD.

Does postgraduate study change a teacher’s pay?

In most Australian public systems, a master’s on its own does not lift your salary. Higher pay bands come with years of service and with certification as a Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher. The rules differ between systems, so check the enterprise agreement for your state or sector.

References

Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (2011). Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
